Vaidya Prof. Banwari Lal Gaur is a renowned and highly respected name in the field of Ayurveda. His immense contribution to the development and promotion of Ayurveda is truly remarkable. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he is one of the pillars of Ayurveda in the contemporary era.
Prof. Gaur dedicated more than 45 years (30 July 1966 – 16 March 2011) of his life to the service of Ayurveda in various academic, administrative, and scholarly capacities. He began his illustrious academic career as a Demonstrator and gradually rose through the ranks to become a Professor at one of the premier institutions of Ayurveda in India, the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur.
Apart from his distinguished academic career, Prof. Gaur also served Ayurveda with exceptional administrative leadership. He held the prestigious position of Director, National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, and later became the First Nominated Vice-Chancellor of Rajasthan Ayurved University, Jodhpur. His visionary leadership significantly contributed to the institutional development and academic growth of Ayurveda education and research.
Prof. Gaur has also played an important role at national and international levels by serving as Chairman and Member of several committees, including the Vice-Chancellor Search Committee, Institutional Ethics Committee, and various Advisory Committees of the Government of Rajasthan and Government of India. In addition, he has served as Dean, Convener, Editor, and Chief Editor of several national and international journals and magazines, contributing immensely to academic discourse in Ayurveda.
During his distinguished teaching career, Prof. Gaur guided and supervised 24 Ph.D. scholars and 48 postgraduate students, thereby nurturing a new generation of Ayurvedic scholars and researchers.
His remarkable services have been widely recognized, and he has been honoured more than 29 times at state and national levels by various organizations and institutions, including those under the Government of Rajasthan, other state governments, and the Government of India.
Prof. Gaur is not only an eminent academician but also a prolific author and researcher. He has authored 31 books in Hindi, Sanskrit, and English, covering diverse aspects of Ayurveda. In addition, he has published more than 650 research papers and articles in national and international journals in Sanskrit, Hindi, and English, out of which over 240 articles are written exclusively in Sanskrit.
He has delivered numerous keynote lectures and chaired sessions in various national and international seminars, conferences, workshops, CME programmes, and training programmes, thereby contributing significantly to the dissemination of Ayurvedic knowledge.
Among his other notable academic contributions, Prof. Gaur has served as an Editorial Board Member of the Ayurveda Encyclopedia (Parts 1–3) and as a Member of the Expert Committee for the Descriptive Catalogue (Parts 1–2).
Beyond Ayurveda, Prof. Gaur has also made substantial contributions to Sanskrit literature. Several scholarly works authored by him in Sanskrit have enriched the field and strengthened the traditional knowledge base of Ayurveda.
